🍁A Maple Grove at the Heart of the Cité
Share
Did you know that the Cité has nearly 30 hectares of maple grove?
A few years ago, Steve Grandmont, a member of our ecovillage and a passionate entrepreneur, decided to showcase this resource by launching a project close to his heart: a sugar shack that is both modern and respectful of traditions and the environment.
Last year, we tapped 1,400 maple trees, which allowed us to produce 12 barrels of syrup. Building on this first experience, we aimed higher this year: 4,000 taps were made to maximize our production while respecting the natural cycle of the maple grove.
But the sugar shack isn’t just about maple syrup production!
Part of our harvest is transformed into delicious maple products, such as maple butter, maple sugar, and other sweet treats you can find:
✅ At the Cité Boutique
✅ At the Petit Marché in Ham-Nord
✅ In several local grocery stores
A Family Story
Beyond its entrepreneurial aspect, La Cabane à Grandmont is above all a family adventure. Three generations are involved—grandmother Suzanne helps her daughter Suzie with the production of maple products, while Élohim, Steve’s son, is actively preparing to take over. Passionate about maple farming, Élohim is currently pursuing a vocational diploma (DEP) in maple syrup production, where he’s learning everything there is to know about managing a maple grove—from identifying trees to transforming syrup into delicious products.
We’re proud to see this beautiful project flourish and contribute to the vitality of our community!
